Cytology Manager

QML Pathology is known nationally and internationally as a leading provider of pathology services throughout Queensland. We are dedicated to ensuring our services achieve and maintain the highest standards of excellence.

Applications are invited for the position of Chief Scientist/Manager in our busy diagnostic Cytology Department. The successful applicant will have demonstrated leadership qualities and will lead a team of dedicated Senior Scientists responsible for the day to day operation and effective management of department staff and resources.

The Cytology Manager will be further responsible for:

  • Ensuring department operations and operational costs performance targets are met
  • Co-ordinating and monitoring both internal and external QA activities
  • Recruitment and selection of new employees and management of staff performance
  • Continually improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the department
  • Preparation and management of the department annual operating plan and budget and monitoring of Key Performance Indicators including labour and consumable costs and revenue and episode growth.

Key skills and qualifications include:

  • A Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent / relevant Diploma and possession of the CT(ASC) certification;
  • Minimum of 8 years post examination experience in a diagnostic cytology practice is highly desirable;
  • Expert knowledge of all aspects of diagnostic cytology including gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology;
  • A thorough knowledge of quality standards and NPAAC requirements in relation to Cytopathology;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the proven ability to instruct and supervise effectively, and promote a culture of team spirit;
  • Ability to assist in managing department staff and resources including planning and preparing work schedules, evaluating new methods and instrumentation, conducting annual performance reviews and ensuring all work is carried out according to established protocols.
  • Commitment to self improvement through continuing education activities and the ability
  • to demonstrate willingness to actively participate in an ongoing educational program;
  • Awareness of Workplace Health and Safety processes and procedures; and
  • Knowledge of quality assurance systems and scientific instrumentation / equipment.
