UTS: Cytopathology
Professional Education in Cytopathology
COMPREHENSIVE COURSE IN CYTOPATHOLOGY WILL BE HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, SYDNEY, ST LEONARD’S CAMPUS DURING 2005. The instructors will be members of the Australian Society of Cytology.
Course Outline
The course will provide intensive instruction encompassing both gynaecological and general cytopathology and will aim to develop diagnostic microscopy skills.
The first ten days will cover cytology of the female genital tract: normal, hormonal, inflammatory, microbiology, viral effects, dysplasias, squamous carcinoma, glandular lesions of the cervix, lesions of the uterus, other sites of the female genital tract, therapeutic effects, staining and contaminants, colposcopy.
The next ten days will cover respiratory tract, urinary tract, alimentary tract, effusions, breast, cerebrospinal fluid and brain, thyroid, automation, fine needle aspiration.

10 January - 11 February 2005
- 10 days of gynaecological cytopathology
- 10 days of general cytopathology
- plus optional examinations on 14 & 16 February
The course will run for four days each week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) from 9am - 5 pm.
Places are strictly limited.

Entry Requirements
No previous knowledge of cytopathology is assumed.
Candidates should have a minimum of a degree in biological sciences or in medicine, or be in the late stage of such a degree. Knowledge of human histology and good command of the English Language are prerequisites.
The Learning Environment
Class notes and manuals will be provided. Apart from the many demonstrations, case studies will be provided for essential diagnostic interpretation practice and there will be a number of tutorials.
There will be an optional examination assessing both theory and practical knowledge at the end of the course.
Successful candidates will receive a certificate of achievement at pass, credit or distinction level according to their performance.
