Cytological Features of Invasive Adenocarcinoma of the Endocervix

Invasive adenocarcinoma of the endocervix may be classified on cytology into well and poorly differentiated tumours. The most distinguishing features helpful in diagnosis are listed in the table below.

Well Differentiated

'Supercrowding' in sheets and tissue fragments Compact cell balls and clusters.
Pseudostratification in cell groups and strips.

Rosettes and Papillary groupings.

Cell dissociation.
Nuclear enlargement + Nuclear enlargement +++
Hyperchromasia Hypochromasia
Round to elongated nuclei Round nuclei, pleomorphism.
Chromatin fine to moderately granular Chromatin fine to moderately irregular
Nucleoli, absent to small and singular. Nucleoli, large and multiple.
Mitoses few Mitoses frequent,
