Specimen type:

Cervical smear

Clinical History:

42 year old female, previous laser treatment for CIN. Subsequent smears reported as normal.

Images:

The current smear contained numerous clusters of cells showing branching, papillary and tubular-like arrrangements.
The sheets showed crowded cells. Slit like spaces could be identified and these spaces were lined by columnar like cells.
Some of the groups showed gland-like openings and again these were lined with columnar epithelium.
Elsewhere, cells resembling endocervical cells were seen and these contained hyperchromatic nuclei, some of which were degenerate.
In some clusters, nuclei were stripped of cytoplasm giving a "feathered" appearance to the group.
At the edge of some clusters a suggestion of nuclear pseudostratification was apparent. Cells were also seen arranged in a rosette-like configuration and strips of cells could be seen coming off larger groups.
On higher magnification, the cells showed moderate nuclear pleomorphism and prominent nucleoli. Cytoplasm was scant and poorly defined.
