A Career in Cytology:
Cytology is the study of cells obtained from body tissues. The cytologist’s role is to use the microscope to examine and diagnose preparations of these cells. The cytologist looks for subtle changes that indicate cancer, pre-cancerous changes, benign tumours, inflammatory changes or infectious agents. A good example of this is the Papanicolaou smear test used to identify and enable treatment of pre-cancerous changes that may progress to cervical cancer if not treated.
The most common specimens examined by cytologists include cells from: cervix (Pap smears), lung, bladder, body cavities, breast, lymph nodes, liver, thyroid and salivary glands.
Cytologists work with cytopathologists to provide a diagnosis, in conjunction with the patient’s clinical history, in a safe, timely and cost-effective procedure This diagnosis plays an important role in the clinician’s ability to effectively understand, treat and manage the patient’s disease.

Education
Most cytologists have a degree in Medical Science/Laboratory Medicine which will have some cytology component. After graduating they gain employment in a laboratory where practical training in diagnostic cytopathology is provided. Once they have the necessary knowledge and experience, at least 2 years post graduation, most cytologists sit the CT(ASC) competency examination of the Australian Society of Cytology.
Employment
Cytologists are employed in laboratories in government and private pathology organisations, in public and private hospitals and medical research. Employment opportunities for trained cytologists are plentiful with a shortage in supply and an ageing workforce.
